HuffingtonPost.com, the self proclaimed left wing response to drudgereport.com and co.,(http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1110/45168.html) recently launched its newest addition to string of highly specialized categories, divorce. Its founder, Ariana Huffington, claimed that she was prompted by the statistic that 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce. It's an astute idea. After all divorce is part of the fabric of our society and America needs a forum for the growing discussion.
Yet I was taken aback by the direction in which many of the contributors on her site were going. One op-ed "Divorce! It’s good for the children!" by http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jane-smiley/divorce-its-good-for-the-_b_782469.html Jane Smiley, argues that divorce can be good.
But is it?
Ok, I understand that many in our society attempt to go with the flow. When they recognize a societal trend they respond with non-judgmental acceptance, i.e. instead of attributing meaning to a given development they just recognize it and report on it. I appreciate the importance of presenting objective-oriented information.
However, I perceive more than just aloof coverage, by contributors to Huffingtonpost.com, of a news-worthy story. Instead, it seems that many who gravitate to this media platform are attempting to justify the trend. Instead of offering an unadulterated statistic to their audience these writers are attempting to reshape an historically negative event (even when justified), divorce, into a positive activity.
The arguments are boring, but non-the-less should be considered.
1. we live in a post-marriage society
2.marriage works for some and not for others.
3. marriage vis-a-vis same sex couples and singles is exclusionary.
I can accept that religious grounded argument for marriage (such as the refrain that "love is a part of marriage, not marriage") often have a minimal impact in the secular public sphere and are already discounted as antiquated and/or myth. Never mind that religious communities of all types are also experiencing relative increases in divorce rates. I can even see why many proponents of divorce discount the anecdotal evidence as to the ravages of broken, uh I mean separated families. I live in Crown Heights, where gang affiliation is often directly attributed to absentee parents. Just as my classmates, of divorced parents, in my hometown of suburban CT. seemed, perhaps mistakenly, to have their own genre of problems (who doesn't right!?).
Still I'm sure many divorced parents and their children are neither gang-bangers or in therapy.
Fine, I can understand all these perspectives.
Furthermore, we may never know whether rampant divorce is a symptom of a larger cultural problem, or just another seminal development in an increasingly changing society.
But at the same time it may be cause for serious concern even for those who feel that our capitalistic mindset requires a materialistic reason to gain our attention.
So I ask: Do the implications of increasing divorce rates have a direct impact on our economic welfare?
What if it is not a mere coincidence that the 1960's liberal revolution and the increasing divorce that came with it, was also the decade when real income reached its peak and has since declined? What if having an economically stable home to turn to (yes two adults living in one location are more likely to accumulate resources to share with others) in times of distress and need, helps strengthen the fabric of our national psyche and, by virtue of that, our productivity? What if your divorce precludes your children from marrying, which negatively impacts the economic environment that we ALL live in? Do the inherent responsibilities of a successful marriage inculcate its members, especially its children, with a sense of monetary responsibility, credit cards and all?
If huffingtonPost.com is going to publish articles justifying societies divorce from marriage than, for the sake of the greater good, it should also explore the ramifications of a society without marriage.

Oliver Even if the Jews Do Control America's Media, If You Had Your Chance...
Oliver thanks for retracting your outrageous comments, “that were anyway taken out of context”. Still your retraction intentionally didn't cover the main offense. You referenced an important issue that many an anti-Semite loves to declare: “the Jews control the media”. Here is some perspective, on your classic display of hate.
You imply that the Jews control the media because…because of what? Your point is that because Jews are disproportionally represented in the media, is in itself evidence that the Jews “control” the media, and that that control was ill gotten?!
This is an interesting strategy, observing a truth, the Jews are disproportionately represented in the media, and then blending a truth with a lie by implying that “disproportionate” equals “illicitly achieved control”, which is a baseless conspiracy. How wise, how subtle, how obvious. The Jew is adept at discerning the hater.
Here is an example. In the 1348-1351s Western Europe was devastated by the bubonic plague, “the black death”. Historians estimate that between one quarter to a half of Western Europe's population perished. The mobs, of course, looked for a scapegoat and discovered a truth: the Jews were less susceptible to the plague. They observed a truth and concluded that the Jews, being less affected, must be responsible for the plague. A rumor spread that the Jews were poisoning the wells, and mobs, egged on by the Stones' (secularists, trying to eliminate Jewish competition), Gibsons' (blood thirsty catholic clergy), and Thomases' (hate filled city officials) of their day, raged in every city, raping, pillaging and killing Jewish men, women, and children. After all, they argued, the truth was that less Jews were dying.
You see what the ignorant masses didn’t know was that Jews were in a constant state of ritual purity. This includes washing their hands before every meal and after every bowl movement. Married Jewish women are required to bathe every 30 days, and Jews in general are advised to bathe on the eve of the Jewish Sabbath. Indeed Jews washed constantly despite the medical view which claimed that people were born with natural oils that protected them from illness and that washing removed this natural protection. 400 years later Germ-theory vindicated the Jewish bible. But at the time, the haters were able to incite the masses against the Jews by conflating a truth –the Jews were less affected- with a lie –the Jews are poisoning the water supply.
Of course Oliver you recognize that American society, excluding your far-left and their Islamo-Facist allies (when Muslims are illicitly attacked, Jews are the first to defend them as they are for all minorities. Where is the Muslim voice?)is not so gullible. They will not start rioting against American-Jews, nor will they turn against Israel for irrational reasons. So you posit assertions based on the truth, while placing conspiratorial inventions next to those truths. You declare the Jews control the media, true, if you mean they are disproportionally represented. Then you add another truth, more Russians were killed then Jews in WWII, true. Then you go on to say Russia had it worse, but because the Jews control the media, Americans are made ignorant! Then you expand on the implications of Jewish control of the media: just as Americans are kept in the dark by Jews regarding the Russians so too are Americans hoodwinked by the Jewish controlled media which is why our “foreign policy is f###ed up for years”.
First off, don’t underestimate America's sense of history. Second, the Russians didn't lose 1/3 of their population. Third, why are Jews responsible for making sure people know about the suffering of our, then, enemies? Fourth, what makes you think that two truths -Jews are disproportionally represented in the media, and that more Russians perished during WW2- prove a lie “Jews have messed up American foreign policy by manipulating public and government opinion using their “control of the media”.

When Will the International Community Defend the People of Gaza!
Yesterday a factory in the South of Israel was destroyed by a rocket launched from Gaza. Whether this was a serendipitous strike or a demonstration of Hamas' ability to hit specific targets, is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is that in recent weeks there has been an up-tick in mortar and rocket attacks from Gaza, and Israeli retaliation.
Does the Huffington Post, the New York Times or the plethora of anti-Israel media-outlets from Russia to Britain, or UNHRC report this or other "minor" events?
Where is this going? If Israel is attacked continuously eventually even Israel will respond. But its response will not only reflect the most recent rocket attacks ("only a few rockets, that have no aim and do little damage"), but the months or even years of provocation (6000 rockets, that have not killed many by pure chance, but have reduced whole cities into trenches and traumatized thousands).
What does this mean for the million plus Gazans? Does it mean the blockade will be lifted? Does it mean that somehow Israel will disappear and HAMAS will have what its Charter declares?
No!
It means that hundreds of teenagers turned terrorists will be killed, and along with them scores of human shields that inevitably "happen" to be in the vicinity. It means that hospitals, schools, and jobs will be destroyed. It means that Palestinians will suffer, not just the shame of being searched for terror weapons that some carry when entering Israel, but that in their own homes they will be die as sure as their roof is used for launching pads.
When will the international community protest HAMAS' and other terror groups' methodical, predictable, and repetitive use of yellow journalism BEFORE blood has been spilled?
Instead of falling prey to the chicanery of HAMAS and like minded terrorists -responding retroactively to the mayhem and destruction- condemn HAMAS for every rocket.
Let there be no question amongst their leadership, population, or region what will happen if they continue.
Today it is a handful of rockets and the destruction of a tunnel, tomorrow...
