Despite conventional wisdom and realistic expectations, the Egyptian riots have nearly pushed Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian dictator, out of office.
How did a leaderless protest movement successfully challenge one of the longest serving and savviest leaders in the Middle East? Adding to the mystery, how did the support of America, Jordan, and the Gulf states, for Mubarak, become moot?
I am not the first to ask this question, and the explanations abound. One compelling account asserts that America was planning an overthrow of Mubarak in 2011, under Bush in 2008.
True or not, Obama has not shied away from vaguely, but unambiguously (as only an American politician can) supporting the Egyptian street. And for the first time since the abortive Oslo Accords, Americas “meddling” is being applauded (or at least not be condemned) by the average Arab and Muslim. This lack of anti-America hate may be due to the fact for the first time in recent years America is turning away from an autocratic (in this case 30 years of loyalty) leader in favor of the common Arab.
Obama, for his part, supports the Arab/Muslim street because of realpolitik. In other words throwing a long standing ally to the wind simply serves America’s best interest. The Saudis, Israelis, Jordanians, and every other ally of America should take this lesson to heart.
That said, why did Obama not come out in support of the Green revolution in Iran? Instead, according to some intelligence sites like debka.com, Obama sent a private letter of support to Iran’s “elected” leader Ahmadinejad. The question is compounded when you consider that Mubarak was a friend while the Mullahs of Iran were our sworn enemies.
One may respond that the Green movement did not reflect the majority of Iranians - just look at the mass pro-Ahmadinejad protests. A fair point, but one could counter that the only difference between the Mullah’s response to the Green movement and Mubarak’s response to the Egyptian protests was political fortitude and strategy.
Thus the Mullahs of Iran expected protests immediately after the disputed elections, and were ready to respond, they also had no qualms about resorting, almost, immediately to mass violence. The anti-Mubarak elements may have learned a lesson. They surprised Mubarak months after the disputed elections, and also reached out to the Egyptian army so as to prevent them from becoming a tool of repression. Another key difference, as pointed out by Debka.com, was that the Iranians regime had a target- the opposition leaders- whereas the Egyptian protesters were leaderless, at least superficially.
Perhaps the difference is simple. Obama only supports movements that he believes will actually succeed because "to support the projected victor is to gain the allegiance of the winner". Or it may be that Obama was a freshman president with little experience when the Green movement emerged, whereas now he is a seasoned politician.
Regardless of Obama's inconsistencies (or consistencies). The real question is will this movement coalesce into an effective Democratic movement that is friendly to America and peace, or whether the ominous silence of Iran heralds a Middle-East that sees a certain genre of Islam, not stability, as the primary objective. The answer to the above question will likely explain why the Egypt movement succeeded while the Green movement failed?

Oliver Even if the Jews Do Control America's Media, If You Had Your Chance...
Oliver thanks for retracting your outrageous comments, “that were anyway taken out of context”. Still your retraction intentionally didn't cover the main offense. You referenced an important issue that many an anti-Semite loves to declare: “the Jews control the media”. Here is some perspective, on your classic display of hate.
You imply that the Jews control the media because…because of what? Your point is that because Jews are disproportionally represented in the media, is in itself evidence that the Jews “control” the media, and that that control was ill gotten?!
This is an interesting strategy, observing a truth, the Jews are disproportionately represented in the media, and then blending a truth with a lie by implying that “disproportionate” equals “illicitly achieved control”, which is a baseless conspiracy. How wise, how subtle, how obvious. The Jew is adept at discerning the hater.
Here is an example. In the 1348-1351s Western Europe was devastated by the bubonic plague, “the black death”. Historians estimate that between one quarter to a half of Western Europe's population perished. The mobs, of course, looked for a scapegoat and discovered a truth: the Jews were less susceptible to the plague. They observed a truth and concluded that the Jews, being less affected, must be responsible for the plague. A rumor spread that the Jews were poisoning the wells, and mobs, egged on by the Stones' (secularists, trying to eliminate Jewish competition), Gibsons' (blood thirsty catholic clergy), and Thomases' (hate filled city officials) of their day, raged in every city, raping, pillaging and killing Jewish men, women, and children. After all, they argued, the truth was that less Jews were dying.
You see what the ignorant masses didn’t know was that Jews were in a constant state of ritual purity. This includes washing their hands before every meal and after every bowl movement. Married Jewish women are required to bathe every 30 days, and Jews in general are advised to bathe on the eve of the Jewish Sabbath. Indeed Jews washed constantly despite the medical view which claimed that people were born with natural oils that protected them from illness and that washing removed this natural protection. 400 years later Germ-theory vindicated the Jewish bible. But at the time, the haters were able to incite the masses against the Jews by conflating a truth –the Jews were less affected- with a lie –the Jews are poisoning the water supply.
Of course Oliver you recognize that American society, excluding your far-left and their Islamo-Facist allies (when Muslims are illicitly attacked, Jews are the first to defend them as they are for all minorities. Where is the Muslim voice?)is not so gullible. They will not start rioting against American-Jews, nor will they turn against Israel for irrational reasons. So you posit assertions based on the truth, while placing conspiratorial inventions next to those truths. You declare the Jews control the media, true, if you mean they are disproportionally represented. Then you add another truth, more Russians were killed then Jews in WWII, true. Then you go on to say Russia had it worse, but because the Jews control the media, Americans are made ignorant! Then you expand on the implications of Jewish control of the media: just as Americans are kept in the dark by Jews regarding the Russians so too are Americans hoodwinked by the Jewish controlled media which is why our “foreign policy is f###ed up for years”.
First off, don’t underestimate America's sense of history. Second, the Russians didn't lose 1/3 of their population. Third, why are Jews responsible for making sure people know about the suffering of our, then, enemies? Fourth, what makes you think that two truths -Jews are disproportionally represented in the media, and that more Russians perished during WW2- prove a lie “Jews have messed up American foreign policy by manipulating public and government opinion using their “control of the media”.

As if Americans are so uneducated as not to recognize a classic anti-Semitic scapegoating when they see it. Ann Coulter silenced Mahmoud Ahmadinejad encouraged: Why?
It is 2008 world leaders and despots alike are meeting in New York City for the annual UNGA summit of world leaders. Columbia University invites Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to speak to the student body to present his "world view".
Outside various Jewish, Israeli, and moral minded individuals gathered to protest Columbia's decision to lend its prestigious name to the man who proclaimed "Israel should be wiped off the map" and an unabashed supporter of terrorist organizations spanning the globe.
The protests were loud and angry. For good reason. But Ahmadinejad ascended to the podium of liberalism and held forth on how there are no homosexuals in Iran!
Tuesday March 23, 2010 controversial conservative commentator Ann Coulter was scheduled to speak at the University of Ottawa Canada. But her speech was canceled due to the angry -frothing at the mouth- crowd who swore to physically prevent Coulter's speech. The police refused to uphold their mandate to protect free speech. The University of Ottawa vice-president and provost Francois Houleo warned her "that freedom of speech is defined differently in Canada than in the U.S. and that she should take care not to step over the line" (The Vancouver Sun). A veiled threat if there ever was one.
When pro-Israel students where accosted by a group of anti-Israel students at York University, also in Canada, during a debate that had sprung up between the Hasbara (explanation) people and the anti-Israel individuals. It quickly escalated into an angry mob of around 50 students, who surrounded the group and chanted anti-Israel and anti-Semitic slurs.
This has been going on for some time and seldom gets reported or discussed. All over the world the majority of "whatever" (the religious, political etc. majority) is imposing itself, often resorting to defending irrational views with violence.
Indeed America and Israel are the last two countries in this world where EVERY view expressed PEACEFULLY is allowed. But there has been a sea change here in the states.
In Columbia and many other universities across America "apartheid week" which basically is a week of Israel bashing, was in full swing, but when Israeli Ambassador to the United State Michael Oren attempted to speak at the University of California Irvin he was interrupted repeatedly, and like Coulter almost silenced!
We in the states must be ever more vigilant. True the old enemy was oppressive governments (Soviet Union, China, Saudi Arabia, Iran etc.) suppressing speech. But don't be fooled it is just as dangerous and undemocratic for majority factions to suppress speech.
Some of my friends have recently asked me why it seems that the most vocal opponents of Islam in America are Jews and conservatives.
I respond with my own observation of a global trend
...anyone who is remotely perceived as pro-Israel OR anti-Muslim is prevented from voicing their opinion. If however, the individual in question is perceived as anti-Israel OR pro-Muslim they are encouraged.
Is it any surprise then that those in America who have for 300 plus years experienced freedom from violence and oppression of the majority OR minority point out a group that has been attacking them all over the world Mumbai, London, Sydney, Queens, Israel, Russia, etc.(do a Google search blank attacks Jews in blank)?
YES JEWS AND OTHERS ARE AFRAID THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN HERE AND THEIR FEARS ARE JUSTIFIED AS THIS TYRANNY OF THOUGHT AND ACTION SWIMS ACROSS THE OCEAN INTO CANADA, CALIFORNIA...
